Mongolian Ger Camps
What Is a Ger Camp?
Ger camps are the primary form of accommodation in Mongolia’s countryside, offering guests the chance to stay in traditional round felt dwellings used by nomadic families. These camps are typically located near major attractions or in scenic areas, spaced at practical driving distances along tour routes.
A standard ger camp usually consists of 15–40 gers and includes a large ger restaurant or a permanent dining building serving both Mongolian and European cuisine. Many camps also offer additional facilities such as game rooms and outdoor playgrounds.
Shared flush toilets and hot showers are generally located in separate buildings away from the sleeping gers. Some camps provide gers with private, attached bathrooms (ensuite gers). If you prefer an ensuite ger, please let us know in advance, and we will be happy to arrange this for an additional fee.
Ger camp staff are dedicated to making your stay comfortable and memorable. While some staff speak basic English, others are fluent in English and additional languages, ensuring guests feel welcomed and well assisted throughout their stay.
About the Ger Dwelling
Many visitors describe gers as cozy and surprisingly comfortable. A ger is a traditional Mongolian round dwelling made with a wooden frame and covered in felt, designed to be collapsible and portable for nomadic life. Modern gers are finished with white canvas on the exterior and interior walls and roof, creating a brighter, more breathable living space. A central roof window combined with the circular structure allows for constant air circulation, helping maintain a comfortable and balanced indoor environment.
Ger Accommodation Interior
Each ger typically includes 2–4 single beds with clean linens, a small altar, night tables, a dining table with chairs, clothes hangers, and a charming wood-burning stove. Slippers are either provided inside the ger or available near the shower facilities. Staying in a ger is considered an essential part of the Mongolian travel experience. For safety and peace of mind, camp gers can be locked with a padlock.
Ger Camp Electricity
Gers are equipped with a single electric light, and some also include a power socket (220V Asian-style plug; adapters are recommended). In more remote camps, guests may charge devices at the camp restaurant or lodge. Electricity in remote areas is usually supplied by generators and is available only during specific hours. Camp pathways are lit in the evening, but lights are typically turned off at night to avoid attracting insects. Bringing a flashlight or torch is recommended.
Ger Camp Heating
Each ger is heated by a wood-burning stove, which warms the space quickly. In areas such as the Gobi Desert, firewood is limited, so camp staff manage the stove as needed and upon request. Guests may also request a small supply of wood to manage the stove themselves. Extra blankets are available if needed.
Wi-Fi Availability
Wi-Fi and internet access are generally not available at remote ger camps. However, 3G SIM cards can be purchased in Ulaanbaatar and may provide internet access near towns or at camps located within mobile network coverage areas.

The Ger Camp Restaurant and Meals
Ger camps typically feature a large central ger or a lodge-style restaurant where both Mongolian and European-style meals are served. Inspired by the traditional nomadic diet, the food is simple, hearty, and made from natural ingredients—a practice that continues today.
Meals at ger camps are straightforward, wholesome dishes prepared with staple ingredients such as beef, mutton, chicken, and occasionally pork, along with pastries, noodles, and rice. Seasonal vegetables are also included when available, commonly tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, carrots, broccoli, mushrooms, beets, lettuce, peppers, radishes, onions, and garlic.
Most camp restaurants also have a small bar offering a selection of soft drinks and alcoholic beverages for guests to enjoy.
