Northern Mongolia Tour

Overview

The East and West Taiga regions are home to the Tsaatan people, with Tsagaan Nuur village as the main access point.West Taiga lies about 20 km west of Tsagaan Nuur, beyond the Harmae Valley. It can be reached by car or bicycle only to the valley’s edge; from there, travel is mainly on horseback due to steep, forested mountains and rivers. Around 20 Tsaatan households live in small family camps spaced 10–40 km apart.East Taiga is located northeast of Tsagaan Nuur, about 30 km toward Hogruk. Access involves crossing the Shishged River by local ferry (or over ice in winter). The area stretches along the Russia–Mongolia border and features dense forests and steppe-taiga valleys. Most camps—home to over 18 Tsaatan families—are reached on horseback, especially in muddy seasons, and are located 6–40 km from Hogruk.
