Overview
The East and West Taiga are home to the Tsaatan people, with Tsagaan Nuur as the main gateway.West Taiga, about 20 km west of Tsagaan Nuur, is mostly accessible by horseback due to rugged, forested terrain. Around 20 Tsaatan households live in small, widely spaced family camps.East Taiga lies northeast of Tsagaan Nuur near the Russia–Mongolia border. Reached via river crossing and then mainly on horseback, it features dense forests and valleys and is home to over 18 Tsaatan family camps.

Your driver will pick you up from your hotel and transfer you to the airport for your flight to Murun. After a 1.5-hour flight, our local team will welcome you upon arrival. From Murun, we will travel to the Darkhad Depression, a scenic region of open meadows, forested hills, and pristine lakes. Enjoy an overnight camping experience surrounded by majestic mountains and the peaceful beauty of Mongolia’s wilderness.

Travel to Tsagaan Nuur village in the northern part of the Darkhad Depression. Upon arrival, we will arrange horses and meet your local horse guide and their family, who will accompany you on the upcoming journey. Your guide will also arrange the necessary border permits for traveling in areas near the Russian border.

After breakfast, we will travel approximately 20 km before beginning our horseback journey into the remote taiga. The ride takes around 4–7 hours, depending on the season and the location of the nomadic Tsaatan reindeer herders, who may move their camps throughout the year. Upon arrival, meet the Tsaatan community, learn about their traditional way of life, and spend the evening sharing time near their traditional teepees.

Day 4: Tsaatan Reindeer Tribe
Spend a full day with a Tsaatan family and discover their unique nomadic lifestyle in the taiga. Learn about traditional reindeer herding and, depending on local arrangements, observe or participate in activities such as feeding, milking, or riding reindeer. You can also enjoy walks or hikes through the surrounding taiga forests while discovering the region’s natural beauty, plants, and wildlife.

Day 5:Riding back to Tsagaan Nuur
Say farewell to the Tsaatan community and begin the horseback journey back toward the edge of the taiga, following the forest trails and crossing the wetlands along the way. Upon reaching the starting point of your riding journey, meet your driver and continue by vehicle to Tsagaannuur village.

Day 6: Return drive across Darkhad
After breakfast, transfer to Murun Airport for your 1.5-hour return flight to Ulaanbaatar. Upon arrival, your driver will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel or guesthouse, which you have booked independently.

Day 7: Khusvgul Lake
Travel through the beautiful Darkhad Valley toward Lake Khuvsgul, passing open grasslands, forested hills, and remote countryside. Along the way, stop at a scenic riverside location and set up camp for the night, enjoying the peaceful surroundings and the beauty of Mongolia’s wilderness.

After breakfast, continue your journey to Lake Khuvsgul, one of Mongolia’s most beautiful natural destinations. Known for its crystal-clear waters, forested shores, and spectacular mountain scenery, the lake offers a peaceful setting to relax and enjoy the pristine wilderness of northern Mongolia.

Day 9:Flight back to UB
Enjoy a relaxing day at Lake Khuvsgul. Take a leisurely walk along the lakeshore, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and admire the crystal-clear water and surrounding forests and mountains. Spend the day at your own pace, soaking up the peaceful atmosphere of northern Mongolia.
