After breakfast, we drive to Tsagaan Suvarga (White Stupa) in Ulziit soum, Dundgobi province. These stunning cliffs were formed from ancient sediment layers dating back 10 million years. Day 5: Journey to Yol Valley

After breakfast, we leave Tsagaan Suvarga and travel to Yoliin Am, located 45 km from Dalanzadgad at 2800 m altitude. This deep, narrow canyon in the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan Mountains is one of the best places to spot wildlife and enjoy dramatic scenery. Named after the lammergeier (Yol), the valley often holds a 1–1.5 m thick ice sheet in summer, with only a narrow strip of sky visible between the high canyon walls.

Day 6: Journey to Khongor Sand Dunes

Seven kilometers north of the Flaming Cliffs, we visit a unique desert tree grove found only in Central Asia. Then we cross slate mountains and 80 km of Ongi steppes to Ongi Monastery, once one of Mongolia’s largest. Destroyed in the 1930s, its ruins stretch across both banks of the Ongi River. Explore a restored temple, the ger museum, the monastery remains, and climb a nearby hill for panoramic views.

Day 7: Journey to Bayanzag

We visit Bayanzag (Flaming Cliffs), named by paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews and world-famous since the 1920s for its dinosaur fossils and eggs. Even without the paleontology, the red cliffs, desert sands, and wide open landscapes make it an unforgettable stop. Bayanzag is located about 90 km from Dalanzadgad.

Day 8: Journey to Ongi Monastery

After a long drive from Bayanzag, we arrive at Ongiin Khiid Monastery, located along the 435 km–long Ongiin River. Founded in 1660, it once stood as one of Mongolia’s largest monastery complexes, with dozens of temples and several Buddhist universities. The site was destroyed in 1939 during the communist purges, and many monks were killed or displaced. Today, ruins remain scattered across the hills, alongside a small restored section where monks have returned since the 1990s.

Founded by Chinggis Khan and later built up by Ogedei, it became a major center for trade and diplomacy before the capital moved to Beijing. The city was eventually abandoned and destroyed in 1388.

Nearby is the Erdene Zuu Monastery, built in the 16th century using materials from the ruins of Karakorum. Although heavily damaged during the Stalinist purges, it remains one of Mongolia’s most important historical sites.
